Stream of Light, VR installation, 2025

Predrag Terzić

Industrial buildings are a testimony of technological development and changes in the rhythm of life during the 20th century. These buildings often retain the impression of human labor, functional aesthetics and the power of collective will. However, when objects go out of use, they become a breaking point between the past and the present - a symbol of decay, but also the potential for creative transformation.

The power plant Power and Light was built in 1932 as a part of the planned electrification system of Belgrade, and symbolized the technological progress and urbanization of that era. Designed in a modernist style, the power plant was not only a utilitarian building, but also an aesthetic expression of the engineering and architectural aspirations of the time. Over the years, the power plant fell into disuse and became part of the neglected industrial landscape.

Through the Stream of Light project, which uses ttechnologically sophisticated tools, it also has social involvement, setting itself as an example of how contemporary art can be the initiator of changes and deep reflections on cultural heritage. This immersive artwork uses a combination of LiDAR scanning, the KIRI engine, and virtual reality (VR) to tell the story of the former power plant Power and Light in Dorćol, Belgrade. This former power plant, a symbol of industrial modernization and energy, is now a devastated building, but its spirit and layers of history remain as an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

The project connects physical space with digital reconstruction and abstract artistic expression, in order to transport visitors through time, space and energy. It explores the destiny of industrial heritage—its decline, but also its potential for renewal through art and technology.

The project explores how industrial heritage, although physically destroyed, can continue to exist as a symbol of collective memory and future potential. Through modern technologies, the space is seen not only as a relic of the past, but as a place that invites reflection on how we restore, transform and remember our history.
