As part of the engaging lecture series curated by the Laboratory for Digital Society [DigLab] at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, we were thrilled to present two thought-provoking sessions this November. Neena Singh delivered an insightful lecture on November 9, followed by Kasia Chmielinski's engaging discourse on November 28.
Both lectures are integral components of the online series titled "The Future of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Social and Cultural Aspects." Our cycle featured distinguished international experts delving into diverse topics, including the philosophy of artificial intelligence, AI's role in post-digital aesthetics, cultural ramifications of AI, AI's intersection with art, non-human agency, social shifts propelled by artificial intelligence, and the broader theme of coexisting with AI and digital technologies in our daily lives.
Neena Singh, a project manager at VUB (Free University of Brussels), contributes to the Knowledge Center for Data and Society, a hub exploring the legal, social, and ethical dimensions of data and AI applications in Flanders, Belgium. Her primary focus lies in the amai! project, which strives to inform and empower citizens by employing citizen science methods to address social challenges through artificial intelligence. Neena is deeply engaged in ethics in practice, with a particular interest in the convergence of art and technology, emphasizing data, artificial intelligence, and ethics. Previously a key member of the DataBuzz team at the imec-SMITH VUB research group, she played a pivotal role in organizing workshops on data and media literacy for students in Brussels through innovative mobile labs.
Kasia Chmielinski (they/them) serves as a co-founder of the Data Nutrition project, an initiative dedicated to constructing tools that mitigate bias in artificial intelligence. As a Stanford University associate, Kasia focuses on developing responsible data systems. Their diverse background includes positions at the United Nations (OCHA), the US Digital Office (EOP / OMB), the MIT Media Lab, McKinsey & Company, and Google. Beyond their contributions to the tech world, Kasia is a multimedia storyteller whose work has garnered support from esteemed organizations such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Sundance Institute, Vision Maker Media, and NPR. Outside the realm of data, you'll likely find Kasia biking or birdwatching in the northeastern United States.
Join us for these enlightening lectures as we explore the dynamic landscape of AI and its profound impact on our society, culture, and everyday existence.
